Scholarships
Scholarships reward academic achievement and generally are given to students with the highest marks. Awards reward academic achievement but also require a demonstration of special qualities, such as community involvement.
The awards listed below are intended for Cowichan area students; however, there are many other awards available for which Cowichan area students may apply. Please consult the current Vancouver Island University calendar for a full listing, or contact Student Affairs.
Canadian Federation of University Women – Cowichan Valley Award
1 award, $500; available to mature female student from the Cowichan Valley, enrolled in or planning to enroll in a program at Vancouver Island University, based on academic achievement and financial need. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by April 30.
Charlotte Ramsay Memorial Award
1 award, $300; available to a female First Nations Cowichan campus ABE student who plans to continue studies at an accredited institution, in either ABE courses or at the post-secondary level; based on academic achievement and financial need. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by April 30.
Cowichan Dogwoods Chapter of the IODE Award
1 award, $500, available to a student who is a resident of Duncan, Mill Bay, or Shawnigan (not Lake Cowichan or Chemainus); first preference given to a student attending Cowichan campus; second to a student attending Nanaimo campus. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by April 30.
Cowichan Foundation Award
Awards, $500 each; for financial need; available to residents of the Cowichan Valley (from Mill Bay to Ladysmith). Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by January 15.
Mike Coleman Citizenship Award
1 award, $250; for a Cowichan campus student in developmental programs or university programs who has demonstrated citizenship within the Cowichan community at large and/or the Cowichan campus, and who is a good all-round student. Does not have to be a returning student. For more information contact Student Affairs at Cowichan campus. Awarded in June.
Ladysmith Women’s Business Network Award
1 award, $250; to a mature female Business student who is also a single parent and is from, or currently resides in, the Ladysmith/Chemainus area. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by January 15.
Margaret Mitchell Scholarship
1 award, $250; for high achievement in the Early Childhood Education and Care program for a first or second year student who normally resides in the Cowichan Valley (Duncan, Lake Cowichan, Cobble Hill, Mill Bay, Crofton). No application necessary. Awarded in June.
Nora Fulton Gibson Entrance Award
2 awards, $500 each; for academic achievement and financial need; available to high school entrance or mature students entering Vancouver Island University for the first time in any program. Preference to students from the Cowichan Valley area. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by March 15.
Richard W. Johnston ABE Award
6 awards, $200 each; for full-time Adult Basic Education students enrolled at each of Nanaimo, Parksville-Qualicum, Cowichan and tiwšɛmawtxʷ (Powell River) campuses. Students must maintain a “B” average, have good attendance and be highly motivated. No application necessary. Awarded in June and September.
Royal Bank Award
3 awards, $250 each; for continuing full-time students enrolled at each of Nanaimo, Parksville-Qualicum, Cowichan and tiwšɛmawtxʷ (Powell River) campuses, based on academic performance and financial need; not restricted to any particular program or year. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by April 30.
Woody Hayes Award
1 award, $500; for strong students with evident motivation who may not necessarily be in the top 5% academically and who demonstrate financial need; available to students entering a certificate, diploma or degree program in business at either the management or support level. Preference given to students graduating from secondary schools in the Cowichan Valley School District (SD 79). Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by March 15.
Bursaries
Bursaries are generally awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. Consult the Vancouver Island University Calendar for a full listing of available bursaries (Bursaries listed here pertain solely to the Cowichan campus.)
Alan and Edna Brown Bursary
1 award; $500; for financial need; available to students who are residents of the Chemainus or Cowichan area. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by January 31.
Cowichan Campus Endowment Bursary
2 bursaries, $250 each (will vary depending on funds available); for financial need; available to students attending the Cowichan campus and who will be continuing their studies at Vancouver Island University. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by January 31.
Cowichan Dogwoods Chapter of the IODE Bursary

Fred Clozza Memorial Bursary
1 bursary, $250; for financial need; available to students enrolled in Adult Basic Education showing strength or career direction in science, and attending Cowichan campus. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by January 31.
Nora Fulton Gibson Memorial Bursary
2 bursaries, $500; to be distributed; for financial need; available to students attending the Cowichan campus. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by January 31.
Ryan McDonald Memorial Bursary
2 bursaries, $350 each; for financial need; must be Canadian citizen and resident of Vancouver Island enrolled in an Applied program. Apply to Financial Aid and Awards office by January 31.
