Early Childhood Education and Care Certificate Program

The program starts on September 3, 2019 and applications with be accepted until August 25th.

Get ready for a rewarding career, where you can work with children and make a difference as they grow, learn and develop. Learn from instructors who care about your success, and prepare for a growing number of positions in the job market. Generous bursaries of up to $5,000 are available to qualified applicants who are either already working in childcare settings, or those who wish to begin work in this career.

Career Opportunities
Graduates are in demand to work in licensed child care settings such as Group Care, StrongStart, Young Parent, Supported Child Development, Preschool, Child Care Resource and Referral Programs, and Child and Family Service Agencies. Students can go on to complete the Infant and Toddler and Special Needs designation.

Admission Requirements

  • General admission requirements apply
  • English 12 with a minimum “C” grade, or equivalent. English Requirement can be accepted by December 2019 with approval of the chair
  • Resume describing education and employment history
  • Two letters of reference, completed on a University Reference Form from persons other than relatives. At least one letter of reference must document completion of 60 hours in a licensed child care facility such as a family childcare, group day care or pre-school
  • Possible group interview with the program faculty
  • Complete and submit application at Vancouver Island University, Cowichan Campus

Students registered in ECE courses can apply for the ECE Workforce Development Bursary (worth up to $5,000 per semester) if they are currently working in a licensed child care setting or for the ECE Student Bursary (worth up to $4,000 per semester) if they are not currently working in the field. Financial Assistance
Financial assistance may be available to students demonstrating financial need. Information on loans, grants, scholarships, awards, tuition bursaries and general bursaries is available online or by calling 250-746-3509. Applications should be made 8 to 10 weeks prior to the start of your program.
